Create a Reading Ritual

Book reading groups are a great way to bind us in marriage. It's intuitive that, when two people spend time together doing intimate things, they tend to require more of that experience. Reading together is a fairly intimate way to spend time, given that one purpose of reading something is to share it with someone. Plus, if we can learn a lot from the subject matter someone reads, it stands to reason that a mate's choice of books gives us an intimate look at who they are. These days, too, with the rising cost of doing anything, or going anywhere, and the limits placed on our pocketbooks, a reading group just makes sense. They are, after all, free. There are a number of these on-line reading groups available, with names like Shelfari, and GoodReads, ReadingGroupChoices etc. These groups offer all sorts of interesting, engaging ideas for married couples. My wife and I are enrolled at GoodReads, for instance. GoodReads has a dazzling display of book offerings, from literally thousands of books to read, commentary about most of them, some from expert reviewers, some from novices such as us, and a five star rating system. The site has a newsletter, a portal that allows us to track the books we've read, and another to finally record those we've always wanted to read but keep forgetting, even while we're standing in the library surrounded by books.

Tin Anniversary

Ten years together. One-hundred-twenty months of wedded bliss. Seems like yesterday you tied the knot, said "I Do", then headed off to your honeymoon in the Catskills, or Niagara Falls, or maybe the Grand Canyon and Vegas. Ten years later, and you're wondering where did the time go? Traditionally, the tenth is celebrated as the 'tin' anniversary. The reason for this could be something exotic, such as the acknowledgment that tin is more durable than paper, used for the first year of marriage. Or it could be recognition that by ten years a couple's golden years are still a long way off. It could even be something as simple as the obvious connection between the words ten and tin. Who knows? The reality is, that in our culture, people recognize ten years with something crafted from tin. So what are some ideas for this? What tin items can be had, or created to salute ten years together? Here are tin (10) ideas to consider:
...6 Tin popcorn bowl. Remember that tin popcorn server you had when you were a kid? Go to E-Bay and look for one. I'm betting your spouse had one of those, too. He or she would love to fill it with buttery, fresh popcorn then sit in front of the TV and share ten years together with you. Recommendation for a movie? Try 'Ghost'. Just don't expect to make it through the pottery-wheel scene. Put the kids to bed first.

This snippet is taken from our soon to be published new book Appreciative Loving. It's part of chapter 2, in reference to public displays of affection.

'One thing we experience from people who encounter us in our public life is a sense of disbelief. Why is that? People have an automatic response to anything that challenges their perceptions and experience. We have to confess that our relationship does that, a lot. We take a fair amount of heat for our open expressions of joy in each others’ company, the simple but heartfelt expressions of love and care we use with each other, regardless of where we are or who is watching. More than once we’ve been advised to ‘get a room’ as they say.
Not to say we’re openly demonstrative to the point of indecency; that’s certainly not us. Indeed, our public interaction is quite the opposite; we elicit stares from other couples because we’re openly tender and caring, not in-your-face tactile like a couple of hormonal teens. But the reactions we elicit are a bit sad in any case. Where is it written that two adults should refrain from showing love and affection for each other? It’s been written and said too many times that the public marketplace is filled with displays of violence and abuse, and our collective response to that is quiet resignation. But if two people, especially two adults, skip along a sidewalk together, or kiss in public beyond the accepted time limit (somewhere between 2 and 2.6 seconds, near as we can figure), others become dismissive and embarrassed.'

If you've experienced such reactions, we'd like to hear about them.

Is Married (Caffected) Sex Better?

You bet it is. How many of you can't even imagine the dating scene?! A question we hear is, "Can a marriage maintain sexual excitement over time?" Absolutely. It even gets better! And here are 6 fun ways to do just that:
1) Carry around a note (affirmation) in your pocket that says I love being with my sexy mate.
2) Text a seductive message to your lover.
3) Put a juicy note in their lunch bag.
4) Wear an outfit you know turns them on.
5) Call them when they're on their way home from work and breathe heavily in the phone.
6) Invite them into the bedroom with lit candles, incense, and music awaiting. Then strip them naked and do a strip-tease for them. Give them a massage--if you can make it that long.

Relationship Status: MARRIED - when legal

CAFFECTION.com
Our mission is to energize relationships, and celebrate an elite status--Caffection. We believe in affirming positive successful relationships.

We believe in marriage. We believe those who choose to marry should be married to their best friend. Having a best friend relationship is the most romantic thing in the world. It's sexy as hell. Just walking down the street together holding hands people notice how attractive you are, and they want it, too. That's our mission: to make marriage between best friends a status to be celebrated. Marriage is for Everyone!
Recently we've had many people in long term caffected relationships, tell us they would be married, if they were legally allowed to be. America, with liberty and justice for all, or almost all. It's time. Time for a grass-roots campaign for equality. Let's start where everyone is looking: Facebook. A friend of ours had this comment; I wish that Facebook would offer "would be married if legally available" as a relationship status.
Who knows someone at Facebook who can make this happen? Great, let's get started.

A Date With Your Sexy Mate

We need to schedule a date with our caffected other and make it happen, especially when we feel we're too busy to take the time.  Today, which turned out to be a stunningly beautiful fall day in Ohio, we'd scheduled one such date.  We packed a picnic lunch and headed out to enjoy the day together.  It's vital to find ways to affirm your relationship to one another, making time for each other is one of the best.  Be sure to sign up for (and do) the weekly affirmations from the Caffection website, too.  We find the more we nurture our love, the deeper our bond gets.

Autumn Caffection

Here are a few ways to celebrate your caffection this autumn.  The couple pictured here is engaged in what could be the earliest, simplest form of establishing an enduring memory together.  Part of being caffected is to allow the kid in you to emerge, release your inhibitions, and chase each other through the leaves.  Follow that up with hot cider, garnished with a stick of vanilla.  Then, fix a fire for the first time this season, curl up with a good book--we recommend one we've reviewed previously--and just read to each other.  There are few things in life more intimate than reading to your mate.  Again, let the kid in you come out and play.  One of our earliest childhood memories is having a parent or guardian read to us at bedtime.  There's something satisfying in a really primitive way in being read to.  Finally, fix a late dinner together.  Make it special; wine and candlelight in the middle of the week is sexy, romantic and unexpectedly affirming.  So kick the leaves, put cider in the crock pot, find a good book, and spend a warm early fall evening just enjoying each other.  You're worth it.

Lovers

CAFFECTION.COM
The term lover is a rather odd one when you think about it. Odd, because choosing to live with someone, and share a life with them, including all the up down sideways and across that makes a life these days, it would seem odd indeed to share all that with someone you just 'liked'. But when someone refers to their lover, it connotes a secretive, clandestine 'other', a person under wraps from a spouse, and not discussed.
We call each other lover all the time, and it's understood in no uncertain terms that we mean each other. Caffection is like that; we're lovers in every way there is, joined at the heart, with no daylight between us. They said it would last six months. That was ten years ago, so perhaps they were right. It has lasted six months, plus another 96 into the bargain. Lovers are odd people. We really do see only each other, think about each other, sleep and wake up with each other. Very odd. And exhilarating. And satisfying. And the way a marriage should be. And that's not odd. That's even. Even better than it appears. Got Caffection?

Book review Manners for Couples

This week we take a look at what we believe is an essential book about being 'coupled', which relates directly to the idea of caffection. Grandson of Emily Post (yes, that Emily Post), Peter Post has compiled Essential Manners for Couples. This is sensible, comprehensive advice on everything 'From Snoring and Sex to Finances and Fighting...' as the jacket says. Useful advice inside covers a surprising range of common and not so common situations, like signals we send, interaction with other couples, our actions in public, work (which the author labels, trenchantly the 'other significant other'), such things as sex when the kids are in the house, and having houseguests. Underlying all the advice is the simple rule of good etiquette. In this book, that rule outlines how etiquette applies to happy couples, and can be a terrific guide to calmer, stronger marriage. Our only disappointment in the book was its minimal attention to financial patterns in a marriage, money being number 1 or 2 on the list of marital stressors, particularly now. Perhaps that's another book. But for great advice on etiquette in happy coupledom, Peter Post's Essential Manners for COUPLES, ©2005 is 'essential' reading.

What a privilege to wake with your sexy mate.  Though we, like you, don't look like this in the morning, it's good to focus on the love you feel about each other and let that shine through to the rest of your lives.  Live each moment as if it were the last you'd spend with your lover.  Take full advantage of the gift your relationship is.

Sexy Mate Affirmation

Though 'internet' has yet to be selected in the survey to the left, we know many couples surf the net together. We enjoy watching fun video clips others recommend to us, researching new ideas, and looking up information about great travel destinations. When the Caffection website goes live, you'll have the opportunity to receive a weekly affirmation. Recently we've asked some friends to carry around affirmation pocket cards that read: "I love being married to ________, my sexy mate!" They're instructed to touch the card at least 3 times a day & silently repeat the affirmation, as well as send a blessing to their mate. The idea is to see if affirmations work as well for other couples as they do for us. The answer is...yes! It's pretty cool to think of your (sexy) mate in the middle of the day, and get to climb into bed with them at the end of your day, even if it's just to cuddle. When you're caffected, and you're both too tired too make love, your relationship allows you to snuggle as you drift off to sleep. This is one of the many reasons being married to your best friend is the most romantic thing in the world.

Sexy

A caffected marriage is as sexy as you-know-where. Two people passionately in love with each other, devoted, committed, caffected, is the sexiest image in art, literature, song or reality. Sexy, caffected love has defined civilizations, changed cultures, produced masterpieces, and launched a thousand ships. And the center staple of all that passion has been sex, and the intimacy that goes hand in glove (so to speak) with it.
Since mankind made the connection between sex and babies it's been humanity's driving ambition to separate the two so the one could be more thoroughly enjoyed. Not that we don't enjoy babies, God love 'em, but we need our own grownup version of suckling, cooing and crying in the night, too. Indeed, an argument can be made that the Creator made sex beneficial to our psyche and comfort so we'd put our minds to finding a way to enjoy it without its reproductive baggage. Sex is powerful comfort in a relationship. More so in a caffected marriage where each member has the others' complete and utter benefit in mind. Sex is simply the cement that bonds us like nothing else. And it's fun, too!
